Mercedes C. LaPorta, President


Mercedes LaPorta, President of Mercedes Electric, was born in Havana, Cuba.  Her family immigrated to the United States after the revolution and settled in Chicago, IL. Mercedes attended Catholic schools through high school and after graduating she went to work for A&P Tea Company. As the first woman buyer for A&P she was instrumental in negotiating an end to a strike by a group of Mexican workers, which saved the company thousands of dollars in labor cost. (more....)

 

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1948, Victor J. LaPorta was raised in Chicago until age 5 when his parents moved the family to Prairie Village, Kansas.   Victor earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Kansas.  After graduating in 1970, he was drafted into the US Army and served our country in Vietnam in 1971.  When Victor returned a year later, he went to work for a unit of Hallmark Cards in Des Moines Iowa.  A year later he was transferred to Chicago where he met Mercedes, and they married in 1975.  That year he went to work for Sylvania and went back to school where he earned his MBA at Benedictine University.
